At Coastal Hotels, sustainability practices apply to all aspects of a hotel’s operation. The objective is two-fold: social responsibility and cost-efficiencies. We take pride in the efforts made to provide a comfortable, local, recycled and sustainable environment for our guests to enjoy. We take thought, care and pride in our sustainable efforts because ultimately, we understand we are part of something much bigger. Environmental conservation is an essential element of Coastal Hotel's mission and vision. Each hotel embraces green practices across all departments, acknowledging that green initiatives are not only environmentally responsible, but economically beneficial too.
Food & Beverage departments lead the way with numerous initiatives including, but not limited to Chef’s gardens, composting, water reclamation, grease/fry oils waste removal, self-bottled filtered water, packaging and cutlery products. Throughout the hotels, eco-friendly cleaning and paper products are utilized, as well as biodegradable key cards. Most associate uniforms are also environmentally friendly.
Delivering Coastal Hotels culinary vision of presenting all restaurant, banquet, catering, social and business guests, with the highly valued farm-to-table experience, means beginning at the source. The farm. The ranch. The stream.
It is here, the passion for the product itself – as it grows, as it is cultivated, as it is fed, as it is nurtured – first matters. As well as, the environment in which it matures under the watchful and caring eyes of equally responsible, equally dedicated and devoted resource partners.
Small local farms, artisans, ranchers and fishermen are carefully chosen for their commitment to offer our hotels hand-selected superior products direct from their fields, trees, streams or pastures. No middle men.
Our food and beverage vendor partners are similarly quality-driven devotees of responsible, sustainable, fair-trade practices. Each properties culinary team does business only with those who value as highly as do they – food’s tradition and its future.
Today’s diners live in an age where the majority of hotel restaurant and banquet operations focus on high productivity and low food cost (often resulting in the purchase of mass-produced, packaged, stored, shipped and dare we say often frozen food items). At Coastal Hotel Properties, food and beverage teams provides quality products with thoughtful preparation and appealing presentation. And doing so to the delight of the diners while being socially responsible yet fiscally wise.
The Guest Rooms
Particularly popular with guests are Green NATÜRA bath amenities— the first amenity program specifically designed for environmental sustainability. This innovative toiletry collection features bottles made primarily from Plastarch Material (PSM), a corn-based biodegradable material and other environmentally sensitive packaging. The coordinating accessories are also made primarily from PSM and packaged in natural recycled paper cartons printed with soy based inks.
The vegetable based soaps are cruelty-free, and contain no animal far or byproducts. All ingredients have been thoroughly tested and are not environmentally harmful in their expected usage and drainage to sewers and treatment plants. Using PSM significantly reduces environmental impact and promotes a sustainable future.
All of Coastal Hotels properties recycle all slightly-used or opened bottles and donates them to worthy area charities such as the Clean the World® Global Hygiene Revolution. In doing so, their hygiene products are distributed to impoverished people worldwide to prevent millions of deaths annually caused by hygiene-related illnesses. Becoming a Clean the World® Hospitality Partner is just one more way Coastal Hotels expresses its overall commitment to saving lives, saving the planet and exercising its social responsibility.
Recycling bins are prominent for both guests and associates. Our hotels Cedarbrook Lodge in Seattle, Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, and Best Western Heritage Inn – feature electric car charging stations.
Another aspect to Coastal’s sustainability effort is our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. The engineering teams at our properties have successfully replaced all lightbulbs with LED lights. LED lights last about 20 times longer than the average light bulb which decreases the amount of manufacturing, packaging and shipping. They also consume 20-80% less energy, benefiting the hotel not only environmentally but economically as well.
High-efficiency plumbing is also utilized throughout our hotels. Toilets are one of the main sources of water use. At our properties the toilets are equipped with water saving features that reduce water consumption by 20-60%.
Sales & Marketing
Coastal demonstrates sustainability in our sales & marketing departments through our efforts to go paperless. We provide eGuides, eBrochures and use online promotional tools in an effort to save paper and reduce waste.
Currently Semiahmoo Resort and Cedarbrook Lodge are in the process of becoming a Green Key members, recognition awarded by The Green Kay Eco-Rating Program. A rating that recognizes the commitment of hotels, motels and resorts in improving their environmental and fiscal performance.
